Choosing a cone splitter for your excavator

You are here:

Which cone splitter suits your excavator?

A cone splitter uses the carrier machine’s hydraulic system to drive a rotating splitting cone. Choosing an attachment for an excavator requires more than matching the machine’s weight class. The hydraulic circuit, mounting system, attachment weight and intended work all need to suit the selected configuration. This guide explains how to narrow down the options and prepare the information needed for a model recommendation.

How does a hydraulic cone splitter work?

A hydraulic motor rotates a threaded cone. The thread draws the cone into the wood, and the increasing cone diameter pushes the wood apart. The excavator positions the attachment. Working behaviour depends on factors including timber species, grain, knots, condition and dimensions, as well as the attachment configuration.

“Hydraulic log splitter” can describe several types of equipment. A cone splitter works with a rotating cone; a cylinder-driven splitter with a splitting wedge uses a different principle. Specifications and working methods cannot simply be transferred between the two. Use the data for the particular cone splitter you are considering.

1. Start with the excavator, then check its hydraulic circuit

The excavator’s weight class is a useful starting point, but it does not establish compatibility on its own. Machines in the same weight class can have different auxiliary circuits, connections and mounting systems. Compare your machine’s actual equipment with the requirements of the proposed attachment.

  • Carrier machine: manufacturer, model, year and operating weight.
  • Hydraulics: available oil flow at the auxiliary circuit and its adjustable working pressure. Total pump output alone does not establish the flow available to the attachment.
  • Connections: existing lines and couplings, plus a case drain line where required by the motor version.
  • Mounting: the exact quick coupler or other attachment mounting system.
  • Installed weight: attachment, mounting components and any additional equipment. Check the carrier’s lifting capacities for the actual combination.

If any of these details are unknown, consult the machine documentation or the responsible service specialist. Missing values should be established before selecting the configuration.

2. Compare the relevant product families

ConfigurationModels to compareSelection considerations
Cone splitters without an integrated grabS1, S1X, S2, S2XCheck the carrier, motor version, mounting and intended accessories together.
Cone splitters with a planetary gearboxSB, SBX, SBXXMatch the specifications of the complete motor and gearbox configuration to the machine.
Cone splitters with an integrated grabSG1, SG3Check the required grabbing and rotation functions and the hydraulic controls needed to operate them.

A model name does not replace a compatibility check. Explain whether your main task is splitting timber, combining splitting with grabbing, or operating different accessories. The cone splitter category provides an overview of the range.

3. Compare a complete motor configuration

A model may be available with different motors. Compare the motor designation, displacement, permitted pressure, required oil flow and weight for the same configuration. A torque figure alone does not describe overall suitability for your machine.

For example, the carrier class for the BLACK SPLITTER S2 is 1–6 metric tonnes, with a weight range of 119–128 kg. Motor 1000 has a displacement of 1,000 cm³/rev and torque of 3,000 Nm. The weight range covers different configurations; the weight of the proposed combination, including its mounting system, must be established separately. These figures do not establish compatibility with every excavator in that weight class.

Do not combine the torque figure of one motor version with the weight or hydraulic specifications of another. Ask for the proposed configuration to be clearly identified in the quotation.

4. When should you consider a grab or planetary gearbox?

An integrated grab is relevant when handling timber is part of the planned workflow as well as splitting it. For SG1 and SG3, compare the particular grabbing and rotation functions and their hydraulic and control requirements. The models’ equipment should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

SB, SBX and SBXX feature planetary gearboxes. Selection still depends on the complete configuration. Neither the gearbox designation nor cone size alone establishes which attachment is suitable for a particular log or excavator. Include timber dimensions, species and typical working conditions in your enquiry.

5. Check accessory compatibility separately

The BLACK SPLITTER range includes drilling systems and other attachments alongside cone splitters. Whether and how an accessory can be used must be checked for the specific base unit, mounting arrangement and connections. Similar model names or matching external dimensions do not establish compatibility.

Use the product overview to explore the range and the gallery to see original product and working photographs. A photograph shows one configuration; it does not establish the scope of supply for a different version.

What information is needed for a recommendation?

Prepare the following details for an enquiry:

  1. The exact excavator model and mounting system.
  2. Auxiliary circuit oil flow, working pressure and available hydraulic lines.
  3. Typical timber species, approximate log dimensions and working conditions.
  4. The tasks required: splitting, additional grabbing or operation of other accessories.
  5. Any existing components you would like to continue using.

Send these details through the contact page. They provide the basis for matching the model, motor, mounting system and accessories.

Frequently asked questions about cone splitter selection

Is excavator weight enough to choose a model?

No. Weight class is an initial guide. Hydraulics, mounting, installed attachment weight and the intended work must also suit the specific configuration.

Is a cone splitter with a grab always the best choice?

It depends on the workflow. Where grabbing is part of the task, check the available functions and required controls. A different configuration may suit an application focused on splitting.

Can every accessory be used with every cone splitter?

Compatibility must be checked for each combination. The base unit, mounting, connections and permitted operating specifications need to match.

Does this guide replace the operating instructions?

This guide supports product selection. Installation, operation, maintenance and safe working must follow the documentation and requirements for the particular attachment and carrier machine. Have the combination checked by a competent specialist before use.
